چکیده

In contrast to the canonical case, microcanonical thermodynamic functions can show nonanalyticities also for finite systems. In this paper we contribute to the understanding of these nonanalyticities by working out the relation between nonanalyticities of the microcanonical entropy and its configurational counterpart. If the configurational microcanonical entropy ω N (v) has a nonanalyticity at v = vc, then the microcanonical entropy ωN (ε) has a nonanalyticity at the same value ε = vc of its argument for any finite value of the number of degrees of freedom N . The presence of the kinetic energy weakens the nonanalyticities such that, if the configurational entropy is p times differentiable, the entropy is p+ ⌊N/2⌋-times differentiable. In the thermodynamic limit, however, the behaviour is very different: The nonanalyticities do not longer occur at the same values of the arguments, but the nonanalyticity of the microcanonical entropy is shifted to a larger energy. These results give a general explanation of the peculiar behaviour previously observed for the mean-field spherical model. With the hypercubic model we provide a further example illustrating our results. PACS numbers: 05.20.Gg, 05.20.-y, 05.70.Fh

Nonanalyticities of entropy functions of finite and infinite systems.

In contrast to the canonical ensemble where thermodynamic functions are smooth for all finite system sizes, the microcanonical entropy can show nonanalytic points also for finite systems. The relation between finite and infinite system nonanalyticities is illustrated by means of a simple classical spinlike model which is exactly solvable for both finite and infinite system sizes, showing a phas...

Microcanonical scaling in small systems

A microcanonical finite-size scaling ansatz is discussed. It exploits the existence of a well-defined transition point for systems of finite size in the microcanonical ensemble. The best data collapse obtained for small systems yields values for the critical exponents in good agreement with other approaches. The exact location of the infinite system critical point is not needed when extracting ...

Entropy of infinite systems and transformations

The Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy is a far reaching dynamical generalization of Shannon entropy of information systems. This entropy works perfectly for probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) transformations. However, it is not useful when there is no finite invariant measure. There are certain successful extensions of the notion of entropy to infinite measure spaces, or transformations with ...

Phase Transitions in Small Systems: Microcanonical vs. Canonical Ensembles

We compare phase transition(-like) phenomena in small model systems for both microcanonical and canonical ensembles. Our model systems correspond to a few classical (non-quantum) point particles confined in a one-dimensional box and interacting via Lennard-Jones-type pair potentials. Already by means of these simple examples it can be shown that microcanonical thermodynamic functions of a small...
